Glossary
| Androgen |
Male sex hormone that promotes the development and maintenance of the male sex characteristics. The major androgen is testosterone. |
Anti-Androgen |
An anti-androgen compound prevents or inhibits the biologic effects of androgens, commonly by blocking the androgen receptors. |
Bedwetting |
The involuntary passing of urine during sleep |
Desmopressin |
Synthetic analogue of the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin. Capable of mimicking the action of vasopressin to reduce the amount of urine production. |
GnRH antagonist |
A substance that blocks gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptors of the anterior pituitary gland, thus preventing GnRH binding to these receptors. This prevents the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary and so suppresses the release of testosterone from the testicles. |
Hormonal therapy |
Can be used in the treatment of prostate cancer. Synthetic chemical compounds that interfere with the production or action of male hormones which promote prostate tumour growth. |
Nocturia |
The need to get up one or more times during the night to urinate |
Nocturnal Enuresis (NE) |
The involuntary passing of urine during sleep. Also known as bedwetting |
Prostate cancer |
Prostate cancer develops when cells in the prostate gland begin to multiply out of control. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect men. |
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test |
Measures the level of a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. All adult men have some PSA in their blood but certain conditions associated with the prostate, cancer included, can increase PSA levels. |
Sleep fragmentation |
Sleep disturbances throughout the night, reducing the total amount of time spent in the deeper levels of sleep. |
Testosterone |
Male sex hormone produced by the testicles from the start of puberty; responsible for normal growth and development of the male sex and reproductive organs; affects bone mass, fat distribution, muscle, energy levels, sexual desire, penile erection, fertility and mood. |
