PENTASA

PENTASA® is Ferring's mesalazine product used for the treatment and long-term management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) (Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease)

PENTASA is a member of the aminosalicylate family, which was one of the first classes of medication shown to be beneficial in treating IBD, still an increasingly important member of today’s options for the treatment of the conditions.

PENTASA is prescribed to treat the mild to moderate symptoms of active IBD as well as being used widely as maintenance therapy to reduce the risk of recurrent attacks.

PENTASA is well tolerated when used long-term, and does not contain lactose, which may cause diarrhoea. Long-term use may help prevent more serious long-term complications of the IBD conditions.

PENTASA is available orally as tablets and granules (sachets) within Europe and the rest of the world, excluding the USA. In the USA, Shire US, Inc. sells PENTASA under a trademark license from Ferring. Topical formulations (suppositories and enemas) are also available for administration via the rectum, allowing a high concentration of the drug to be in contact with areas of inflammation at the lower end of the digestive tract.

Oral PENTASA has a prolonged-release formulation, helping to ensure release of active mesalazine throughout the entire length of the intestine from the duodenum to the rectum. Topical PENTASA formulations (enemas and suppositories) enable active mesalazine to remain in contact with the inflamed mucosa for several hours. Recent research reported advantage in taking a combination of oral and creme.

PICOPREP

Some endoscopy, surgery and radiological procedures require the patient’s bowel to be cleaned in advance.

Ferring produces PICOPREP®, a dual action laxative medication. This cleanses the bowel and is easy on the patient. The patient is therefore prepared as easily as possible for what can be an uncomfortable procedure.

This product is also available under the trademarks PICO-SALAX® in Canada and PICOLAX® in the UK.

GLYPRESSIN

Vasoconstrictor therapy is used for the emergency control of bleeding oesophageal varices (BOV). The aim of the vasoconstrictor is to restrict the flow of blood into the portal vein by 'splanchnic vasoconstriction' – that is, narrowing of the blood vessels feeding into the portal vein which in turn reduces the volume and pressure of blood reaching the varices.

GLYPRESSIN® is quickly and easily administered to patients by the healthcare professional giving an injection directly into a vein. It has a good safety record and sometimes may need to be used repeatedly in seriously ill patients.
